Western Illinois Adds to 2017 FCS Victories Over FBS

Western Illinois pounded Coastal Carolina 52-10, adding the ninth of the 2017 FCS victories over FBS teams in resounding fashion.

Western Illinois 52 at Coastal Carolina 10 – Needless to say, Western Illinois did not fear the teal as they rolled-up the score on Coastal Carolina.  For Coastal Carolina, this one is yet another of the lost turnover battles that have featured so prominently in these FCS victories over FBS teams this year.  The Leathernecks of Western Illinois won the turnover battle 4-0.

Additionally, the touchdown passes to interceptions ratio was another metric that told the story.   Western Illinois had four touchdown throws, with no interceptions.  Conversely, Coastal Carolina had zero TD throws and gave-up three interceptions.  There is no surviving these kind of stats, and the Chanticleers went down to defeat.

The Leathernecks had especially gaudy passing stats, completing 18 of 20 for 285 yards, gaining almost 16 yards per catch.  Seven different Western Illinois receivers had a long reception of at least 15 yards.

Western Illinois chalked-up the second Missouri Valley win over an FBS squad this season.  The Sun Belt took their third FCS loss of the season.  Coastal Carolina is playing their first season in the Sun Belt, and the FBS, after moving up from the FCS.
