College Football Notes/FCS Victories Over FBS: Central Ark

Central Arkansas won in the ongoing FCS victories over FBS teams battle in first full weekend of college football.  Additionally, notes on other games.

Central Arkansas 35 at Western Kentucky 28

Although there were many close calls, last Thursday night saw the lone win in the ongoing FCS victories over FBS teams battle as Central Arkansas extended the Hilltoppers misery into 2019.  Western Kentucky got off to a 14 point lead, but Central Arkansas came-on in the second quarter and finished things off with a 21-0 fourth quarter.  The Bears showed Southland tough as wide receiver Lujuan Winningham had 8 catches for 222 yards and three touchdowns.  The high-powered Hilltopper offenses under former head man, Jeff Brohm, must seem like a distant dream to the WKU faithful.  The C-USA Hilltoppers travel to what may be a soggy Florida International for a conference game this Saturday.  Central Arkansas is at Austin Peay this Saturday.

First Weekend (Plus) Notes

Hawai’i’s offense was explosive against Arizona, but they barely survived multiple turnovers.

Clemson served-up another shot across the bow by demolishing Georgia Tech.

BYU never threatened Utah.

UCF showed why many of these top notch FBS teams make a mockery of competition when playing certain MEAC and SWAC teams.

Keep an eye on Cincinnati as the Bearcats look tough and Power Five athletic directors place Fickell on their wish lists.

Don’t look now, but Tulane had a statement win among the Group of Five.

Minnesota barely escapes with the help of turnovers.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane was less than a Cat 0 in East Lansing.

Wisconsin with smashing shutout at South Florida.

Some preseason magazines had Rice last in the FBS, but the Owls played tough on the Hudson.

Purdue wondering about the stealth altitude at Reno as Nevada scores twice, very late and even later.

Peyton is about the only freshman quarterback I have seen that was NFL ready out of the box.  Nix that, because Bo may know.  Auburn was hard as nails on the last drive against Oregon.

This is to be expected when Iowa State hosts Northern Iowa.

The Mad Hatter prevails in Kansas debut in typical precarious fashion.

Maryland squeaks by Howard by 79.  See UCF entry above.

Not saying Tennessee underestimated Georgia State, but doing so is at one’s peril considering the high southern football culture of the Sun Belt.

Missouri victimized in the rare air of Laramie by miscues, missed tackles, missed assignments, and Wyoming misdirection.

Weber State gave San Diego State all they wanted in a defensive slugfest out west.

USC hung-on for dear life after Daniels left with season-ending injury.

High elevation teams were all winners against their lower elevation visitors.  Some losing, tough guy, head coaches were heard dismissing elevation as a factor.  Purdue faded late in the game at Nevada.  It was very, very, late by Purdue time.  Missouri missed a late comeback chance at Wyoming.  Missouri State faded by halftime at Northern Arizona.  These were all night games against midwest visitors.  This issue would be a very interesting computer project for someone so inclined.
